Whitaker was the brilliant southpaw regarded by many as the best pure boxer in the sport. For 12 rounds Whitaker frustrated Chávez with his movement, jab and defence, making him miss and beating him to the punch again and again. Then came one of boxing’s most infamous decisions. One judge had Whitaker winning 115-113. The other two somehow scored it 115-115, producing a majority draw and keeping Chávez unbeaten. The official result said draw. Most of the boxing world saw a Whitaker victory.
