The Todd Atkins Focus Fights Audio interview centered on a problem for rival MMA promotions: Todd Atkins believes they need a platform as large as Netflix to stand out against the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s frequent events. He also discussed what a major signing could mean for Rizin Fighting Federation, why Zuffa Boxing’s funding concerns him and how Millions helps new interviewers reach athletes.

What did Todd Atkins say about MMA promotions competing with the UFC?

Todd Atkins said rival MMA promotions cannot count on fans making room for them simply because the UFC runs so often. He wants to see a competitor secure a widely available platform and make a move that changes how fans view it, rather than announce another show that audiences must seek out.

Why a Netflix announcement would matter

Atkins said a promotion announcing six booked Netflix dates would get the MMA audience’s attention. He contrasted that with an ESPN+ announcement, which he thought would invite comparisons with the Professional Fighters League’s run on ESPN. In his view, PFL had the benefit of sharing a network that already carried the UFC but still struggled to attract viewers.

Distribution was only part of his objection. Atkins said promotions need to tell fans when and where to watch. He recalled that a K-1 Japan and WGP Kickboxing crossover was already underway before he realized it was on ESPN+. Requiring a fan to find another service and pay for it, he argued, gives that fan an easy reason to watch something else.

What a Rizin signing could signal

Atkins said he was less interested in Rizin Fighting Federation’s current American audience than in whether it would make an unusual move after the year ended. Signing a prominent fighter unhappy with the UFC, he said, would suggest a shift toward the approach of PRIDE Fighting Championships. He distinguished established promotions such as Rizin and Oktagon MMA from newer shows trying to establish themselves.

He also wanted Rizin to be more visible on social media and suggested it could expand its reach in places such as Singapore or the Philippines while remaining an Asian promotion. His point was not that every promotion must challenge the UFC in the United States. It was that interested fans need a clear way to discover what a promotion is doing.

How did Todd Atkins describe the early MMA community and regional shows?

Todd Atkins said people he met through early MMA internet forums felt they were helping build the sport. He sees a different incentive now that MMA is established: many creators pursue their own podcasts or channels. He did not object to that work, but said smaller promotions still need people who care enough to make their events visible.

From internet forums to local audiences

Atkins recalled people from Tapout recognizing him through online forums. He contrasted their sense of ownership with today’s media landscape, where someone can love the UFC without feeling responsible for the wider sport’s growth. Even willing advocates face a practical limit, he added: talking about an international event does little for a United States audience if fans cannot find a way to watch it.

River Spirit and XFN

Discussing regional MMA, Atkins mentioned fighters who had appeared on a local promoter’s shows, including Jacoby Smith, whom he identified as a UFC fighter. Atkins said that promoter had not developed a fighter from the beginning who subsequently went on to greater success, a criticism he had made to him directly.

He also described a local star who draws people to River Spirit and discussed Tater McSpadden’s wish to fight in jean shorts. Atkins said XFN lets fighters choose what they wear rather than imposing the uniform approach associated with larger promotions. For a regional show, he argued, drawing an audience to the arena matters more than producing an elaborate television presentation.

What did Todd Atkins say about Zuffa Boxing and its funding?

Todd Atkins said Zuffa Boxing faces two problems: fans may not know when its shows are happening, and he believes the project depends on Saudi funding rather than TKO spending its own money. He argued that a frequent event schedule cannot create interest if the promotion fails to make its next card easy to identify.

Getting viewers to the next show

Atkins said he could not name Zuffa Boxing’s next show without looking it up. He treated that as a promotion problem, not a test of whether fans care enough: a viewer who follows boxing closely might search for a date, but a less committed viewer can choose another event that weekend.

He also questioned how a company already associated with frequent UFC events could make additional boxing shows feel worth watching. The issue, in his telling, was not whether a fight could be entertaining. It was whether audiences knew who was on the card and why they should set aside time for it.

Saudi money and star-boxer terms

Atkins argued that TKO’s shareholders would resist the company funding an initially loss-making boxing promotion. He said Zuffa Boxing’s reliance on Saudi money would become a problem if that backing pulled back. Those were Atkins’s assessments of the project’s finances, not figures he offered for its costs.

On Shakur Stevenson, Atkins said an established boxing star would expect to negotiate on his own terms rather than accept a restrictive long-term arrangement. He used Stevenson to illustrate another challenge for a new promotion: attracting a major name does not mean that fighter will surrender control over which opportunities make sense.

Why does Todd Atkins think some UFC cards lack stakes?

Todd Atkins said the UFC’s ability to stage events nearly every weekend does not guarantee that each card feels important. For him, entertaining action and meaningful stakes are different things. A compelling matchup needs a reason for fans to care about its outcome, not just the possibility of a finish.

Entertainment versus significance

Atkins estimated that a UFC event is available in roughly 50 of the year’s 52 weeks. He said that pace can leave individual cards short of prestige, even when the fights themselves deliver action. Atkins put his distinction in its starkest form:

But would those fights mean anything? No.

He was contrasting a consequential matchup with the spectacle of putting unproven people in a cage. He pointed to the matchup between Kavanaugh and Timorov as one he considered important because both were highly touted and the winner stood to receive a push.

ONE Championship and shows in Philippine malls

Atkins credited ONE Championship with making some fighters already active in Thailand familiar to viewers outside Asia. He named Rodtang and Stamp as examples of fighters United States fans came to know through the promotion’s fights.

He also described a hybrid fighting promotion he had encountered in the Philippines that stages events in malls. He said people gather in those malls partly because of the heat, giving the shows a place to find an audience. His broader point was that a promotion without a major television deal can still give people a reason to attend through effective local and social-media outreach.

How has Millions shaped Todd Atkins’s MMA interviews and advice to newcomers?

Todd Atkins said Millions has made it easier for him to invite athletes to interviews and has exposed his work to people he might not otherwise have reached. He recommends it to aspiring MMA interviewers who lack established contacts, while his own experience shows how much time those contacts can otherwise take to build.

Inviting guests without an established network

Atkins said he invited two athletes who spoke English without needing an interpreter. He described options for requesting an interview, having clips prepared from a conversation and reviewing those clips before using them. He also said creators can share the finished clips elsewhere and may have opportunities to earn money or sell merchandise on the platform.

As an example for newcomers, Atkins mentioned a TikTok creator called PS MMA who had not conducted interviews before Atkins encouraged him to try Millions. The creator could send invitations without already knowing the athletes. Atkins said that removes some of the work of building a contact list from scratch, though an invited guest can still accept or decline.

Breaking news while living in Japan

Atkins traced some of his earlier reporting opportunities to living in Japan and knowing people around fighters there. He said time spent with Kid Yamamoto and information from Enson gave him access to news he was less likely to get from a distance. Atkins recalled learning about Yamamoto’s upcoming fight with Tony Valente through an acquaintance named Arashi, who described the opponent to him as “American Bruce Lee.”

He said he obtained more such information then than he does now. That history informed his advice to new interviewers: Atkins has spent decades making contacts, but believes someone starting out should not have to wait that long before asking an athlete for an interview.
