The Ultimate Fighting Championship uses an eight-sided cage known as the Octagon to ensure neutrality, maximize fighter safety, and optimize camera angles for television broadcasts. When the UFC was conceived in 1993, founders wanted a structure that wouldn’t favor any specific martial arts discipline. A standard square boxing ring gives strikers an advantage by allowing them to trap opponents in a corner, while a completely circular wrestling mat favors grapplers. The wide 135-degree angles of the octagonal design eliminate tight corner traps, forcing fighters to continuously circle and use space dynamically. Additionally, the vinyl-coated chain-link fence protects athletes from tumbling out of the ring onto the floor during complex grappling transitions. The design originally brought to life by Hollywood art directors and partly inspired by martial arts cinema has since been trademarked by UFC parent company Zuffa, LLC, serving as both a functional arena and the iconic structural symbol of the sport.
