Tattoo Culture Needs Change

During COVID, Nelly Bernal taught herself to tattoo on her own leg. She ordered a gun, made stencils, and went for it. But when she walked into shops in Boulder, Arizona, and Denver, nobody took her seriously. She saw the culture: apprentices have to eat shit before they're respected. There's honor in that, but it's not the only way. Too many talented artists can't afford to be the grunt first. The old model is broken, and it's time for a new one.
