John Cena’s infamous rap aimed at Eddie Guerrero remains one of the most controversial promos of WWE’s Ruthless Aggression era. On the January 30, 2003 episode of SmackDown, Cena was portraying his “Doctor of Thuganomics” character and used an intentionally provocative freestyle to build heat for his feud with Guerrero. The promo leaned heavily into offensive stereotypes surrounding Guerrero’s Mexican heritage, immigration, and the U.S.-Mexico border. Much of the material relied on language and racial provocation that would be extremely unlikely to make it onto modern WWE programming. At the time, however, WWE was known for pushing boundaries, and the goal was straightforward: establish Cena as an antagonistic heel while generating sympathy for Guerrero. The segment has remained controversial, but the rivalry ultimately became part of Cena’s early development as a performer. Despite their on-screen hostility, Cena and Guerrero developed genuine respect for one another, with Cena later speaking highly of Guerrero’s influence on his career. A wild snapshot of just how different WWE television was in the early 2000s. 🥶
