Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena: The First Clash on SmackDown (February 2003)
2 views11 Sep 2026
Before they became two of WWE's biggest icons, Brock Lesnar and John Cena clashed for the first time on SmackDown in a battle that showcased the future of the company.
Fresh off his Royal Rumble victory, Brock Lesnar entered as an unstoppable force, while the brash, trash-talking John Cena looked to shock the WWE Universe by taking down "The Next Big Thing." Cena even fired off a pre-match freestyle, mocking Lesnar before the opening bell—a decision he would soon regret.
Despite showing incredible toughness and briefly turning the momentum with a steel chain, Cena couldn't keep Lesnar down. Brock weathered the attack, unleashed a series of punishing suplexes, and finished the match with a devastating F-5 for the victory. After the bell, Lesnar made an even bigger statement by driving Cena into the steel ring post with another F-5, sending a message to WWE Champion Kurt Angle.
It was the first chapter of a rivalry that would evolve into one of WWE's most memorable battles over the next decade.
