After winning the Western Mass Novice Golden Gloves in 1989, he transitioned primarily into coaching, helping fighters like Fernelli Feliz reach the world rankings. Then, in 1994, an unexpected opportunity changed everything. When an opponent pulled out of a fight involving Leon Spinks, he stepped in and ended up scoring a first-round knockout over the former world champion.
