Monster Promotions is kicking off Cinco de Mayo weekend in Arizona with a fight card, and the main event has been a long time coming. Cinco de Monster 2 takes place Saturday, May 2 at Twin Arrows Casino outside Flagstaff. The card features eight bouts of amateur Muay Thai with two national championship titles on the line, headlined by a matchup that was booked multiple times before injuries forced it off the card each time. Jonathan Hernandez and Omar Mateen are finally fighting. Mateen is the reigning Monster Promotions champion, coming off his first career loss after stepping up in weight to challenge the top-ranked 135-pound fighter in the country. Hernandez has been waiting for this shot. When they meet on Saturday, the WBC Amateur National Championship and the Monster Promotions belt are both on the line. That same 135-pound fighter, Jorge Figueroa, fights in the co-main event against Bryan Hernandez. Figueroa is widely considered the best at his weight in the country and is coming off a win over Mateen. It means fans in Flagstaff on Saturday night will see both sides of that story play out on the same card. Also on the card: Kevin Cummings, who spent nearly a year training in Thailand, returns to compete against Monster Promotions veteran Judas Madrid for the national number-one ranking at super welterweight.
