Ilia Topuria, nicknamed “El Matador,” is a professional mixed martial artist who has competed in the Featherweight and Lightweight divisions of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Born in Germany to Georgian parents, he spent his childhood in Georgia before moving to Spain as a teenager, where he began training at the Climent Club in Alicante and earned a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Known for his crisp, explosive boxing skills paired with elite grappling, Topuria quickly rose through the European regional circuit with an undefeated record before signing with the UFC in 2020. Topuria reached peak prominence in the UFC by winning championships across two weight classes. He captured the UFC Featherweight Championship in February 2024 by knocking out Alexander Volkanovski, and later successfully defended the belt by stopping Max Holloway.
