CM Punk: From WWE to UFC

CM Punk (real name Phillip Brooks) is a world-renowned professional wrestler who gained massive mainstream fame in WWE for his rebellious anti-authority persona, sharp promo skills, and high-profile championship runs. Following a bitter and highly public split from WWE in 2014, Punk shocked the sports world by signing a multi-fight contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) later that year. Despite having zero background in competitive high-level martial arts or amateur wrestling, the 36-year-old committed full-time to MMA training, joining the elite Roufusport academy in Milwaukee under respected coach Duke Roufus to prepare for his debut in the welterweight division. Punk’s UFC stint proved to be a difficult reality check regarding the gap between professional wrestling and elite combat sports. He made his Octagon debut at UFC 203 in September 2016 against young prospect Mickey Gall, who immediately took Punk down and submitted him via rear-naked choke just two minutes into the first round. Punk returned to the cage two years later at UFC 225 in his hometown of Chicago to face Mike Jackson; he lost via a clear unanimous decision in a bout where he was visibly outmatched striking and grappling (a result later overturned to a No Contest after Jackson tested positive for marijuana). While Punk was praised for his courage in stepping into the Octagon with no prior experience, his 0–1 (1 NC) record effectively ended his brief MMA experiment, and he eventually returned to professional wrestling.
