Champions League Semifinals: Analyzing the Narrative Surrounding Each of the Final Four
The 2025/26 UEFA Champions League quarterfinals delivered no shortage of talking points. Bayern Munich survived a scare to beat nemesis Real Madrid in a 6-4 thriller across the two legs, snapping Los Blancos' 12-year winning streak against the Bavarians in the process. Atletico Madrid sprung the shock of the round as they dumped out La Liga leaders Barcelona in an epic all-Spanish affair, while reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain and current Premier League leaders Arsenal also made their way through to the semifinals, the former in more comfortable fashion than the latter.
So, the road to Budapest is now set. Paris Saint-Germain vs Bayern Munich. Atletico Madrid vs Arsenal. The winners of those two clashes will meet in the stunning Puskas Arena in the Hungarian capital with the biggest prize in European club football on the line. But what is the narrative surrounding each team as they gear up for the semifinals? Let's take a look.
Bayern Munich: Living Up to the Hype
Online betting sites have considered Bayern Munich one of the frontrunners to win the Champions League all season long. Now, however, with the competition reaching its annual crunch time, the Bavarians find themselves positioned as the outright favorites for the first time. The latest online sports betting at Bovada odds list Vincent Kompany's men as the short-priced 7/4 favorite to claim the crown in Budapest, and the task now, as it has been for much of the season, is living up to the hype.
Bayern have been in riveting form all season long, primarily thanks to the spectacular front line of Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Luis Diaz. The trio has a whopping 92 goals and 53 assists between them already this season, and all three of them were on target in the thrilling quarterfinal victory against Real. Kane has 50 of those goals, and this season, the Englishman has been the most prolific striker in Europe.
But will that devastating attacking play be enough to lead Bayern to the title? At this point, it would take a brave punter to bet against them. They meet Paris Saint-Germain in the semis, and after beating the Parisians at the Parc des Princes in the initial league phase, they will fancy their chances of reaching the final for the first time since hoisting the trophy in 2020.
Paris Saint-Germain: Peaking at the Perfect Time
PSG head into the semifinals as the defending champions after lifting the famous 'Big-Eared' trophy for the first time ever last season. However, for much of this season, the Parisians have looked like a shadow of the team that stormed to a 5-0 victory against Inter Milan on the grandest stage 12 months ago. In this season's league phase, they lost to both Bayern and Sporting, while drawing against both Newcastle and Athletic Bilbao.
Domestically, they have also floundered somewhat, losing home and away to Monaco, as well as suffering defeats against Marseille and Rennes. However, in recent weeks, Luis Enrique's men have begun to find peak form, the kind of form that led them to a maiden crown last year.
The menacing strike force of reigning Balon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Désiré Doué is fully fit and firing for the first time all season. And it comes as no surprise to see that with those three now on song, the results have begun to pick up.
PSG thumped Chelsea home and away in the round of 16, and now they have knocked off reigning Premier League champions Liverpool after winning 2-0 in both Paris and at Anfield. That form ensures that we're set for a blockbuster semifinal against Bayern Munich. But will it be enough to knock off a German giant in similarly spectacular form? Time will tell.
Arsenal: Stopping the Rot
Arsenal were the only team ahead of Bayern in the Champions League betting charts for much of the season. However, in true Gunners fashion, form has nosedived throughout the month of April, and after being on the hunt for a famous quadruple just a few short weeks ago, there's a very real chance that Mikel Arteta's men will end the season without any silverware at all.
Manchester City started the slide when they beat Arsenal in the League Cup final at Wembley. Then, second-tier Southampton got in on the act when they dumped their more illustrious opponents out of the FA Cup. Now, Bournemouth have handed the Gunners a hammer blow in the Premier League and opened the door for City to triumph there as well, while their Champions League quarterfinal victory against Sporting CP – a 1-0 aggregate win sealed with a goalless draw in the second leg at the Emirates – left a lot to be desired.
Now, Atletico Madrid are all that stands between them and a first Champions League final in two decades. However, should Arteta approach this clash with his now trademark negative tactics, he may well live to regret it: No one does anti-football better than Diego Simeone.
Atletico Madrid: The Underdogs
Only two teams have made it through to more Champions League semi-finals than Atletico Madrid throughout Diego Simeone's 13 seasons in charge. Their upset win against Barcelona has ensured that 2026 becomes their fourth trip to the final-four, with only Real Madrid and Bayern Munich managing more. On each of the three prior occasions, they were the underdogs. And on two of them, they made the oddsmakers eat their words.
This year, El Cholo will be confident. His side is already out of La Liga contention, allowing him to rest and rotate his squad to ensure that they are fully fit for the Champions League, a tactic he already displayed in the build-up to the quarterfinals against Barcelona. Semifinal opponents Arsenal play a brand of football that both Simeone and his players are acutely adept at, and there's a very real chance that Mikel Arteta may well play right into his counterpart’s hands in the semifinals. Write Atleti off at your peril.
