Fans who follow sports news closely have excellent opportunities to bet on their favorites in Nevada. According to gambling expert Matt Bastock, the best sportsbooks in Nevada offer more markets, bigger bonuses, and crypto-friendly banking for their users. To maximise on your bets, here are 5 famous athletes from Nevada who are worth keeping an eye on.
1. Tennis Legend Andre Agassi
Andre Agassi, born in Las Vegas in 1970, showed signs of brilliance at an early age. By 12, he captured the Indoor Boys’ 14s Doubles title in Chicago, a victory that soon led him to Florida, where he joined a renowned tennis academy at just 13. His potential was immediately recognized, and he was offered a place there without charge. Over the course of his professional career, Agassi collected 60 ATP singles trophies, completed the rare Career Grand Slam, and added an Olympic gold medal to his achievements. He also secured 17 Masters titles and the 1990 season-ending ATP Tour World Championship. Following in the athletic footsteps of his father, Mike Agassi, a former Olympic boxer, he built his reputation on sharp returns and relentless play — earning him the lasting nickname “The Punisher.”
2. Baseball Star: Bryce Harper
Bryce Harper was also born in Las Vegas in 1992. As the son of a steelworker and a lawyer, he had no strong ties to baseball. Yet, even as a child, Harper developed an early love for the game. At the age of three, he started playing T-ball and outperformed children twice his age. His training was to continue relentlessly.
At the age of 16, Harper hit what was then the longest home run in Tampa Bay Rays history at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. This is how Harper made headlines for the first time as Baseball's Chosen One in Sports Illustrated. Since then, Harper has been unstoppable. In 2010, Harper signed a $9.9 million contract with the Nationals. 2015 was Harper's breakout season, in which he won his first NL MVP Award with 42 home runs. In 2019, he moved to the league rivals Philadelphia Phillies. In his first season with the Phillies, Harper hit 35 home runs and was named NL MVP for the second time in 2021. In 2022, Harper hit 5 home runs and helped the Phillies qualify for the World Series.
To this day, Harper is still going strong in the professional league and will continue to hit many more home runs.
3. NFL-Star: DeMarco Murray
Las Vegas is where the pros come from. Also, American football legend DeMarco Murray was born there in 1988. He played football in high school and was selected for the All-Conference team three years in a row.
In 2011, Murray joined the Dallas Cowboys, for whom he played four seasons. He then moved to the Philadelphia Eagles and subsequently to the Tennessee Titans. In 2014, he was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year, marking the peak of his career. In his last year, he ran 1,947 yards, scored 27 touchdowns, and caught 22 passes, and ended his career with the end of the season of 2017/18.
He served as a running back in the National Football League for seven seasons and is still considered one of the top running backs. Today, he coaches college students in American football.
4. Combat Multitalent: Frank Mir
Las Vegas is also the birthplace of mixed martial artist Frank Mir, who most recently competed for Bellator MMA in the heavyweight division. He was born in 1979 and began training early at his parents' school. In his teenage years, he already earned his black belt. His father convinced Mir to take up wrestling, and he went on to win the state championship in his final year of school. In addition, the multi-talented athlete competed in track and field events. Later, Mir started jiu-jitsu and made his professional debut in 2001.
Mir had a long UFC career before he began as a professional MMA fighter at Bellator MMA. He still holds the record for the most submission victories in the history of the UFC heavyweight division. With 27 fights, Mir has the longest uninterrupted tenure of any fighter and is known as the first to knock out Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira.
5. Olympic Champion: Julia Mancuso
Julia Mancuso was not born in Vegas, but she still shines for the USA as a skier and Olympic champion. Born in Reno in 1984, Mancuso made her World Cup debut at the age of 15, where her talent was discovered. She won eight medals at the Junior World Championships World Cup races, five of which were gold. At the age of 17, she was nominated for the 2002 Olympic Games, where she took third place.
In 2005, she won bronze in the Super-G and giant slalom at the World Championships. In 2006, she took second place in the World Cup. The same year, she won the gold medal at the Winter Olympics. In total, she won four Olympic medals, inspiring many young winter athletes in the USA.
