My name is Katie (kaykay) Bures. I am about to graduate as the first deaf DPT and am moving over to Jeannette PA to work at King Physical Therapy full time. I was born with a little hearing but progressively lost it over the years, losing the last 5% and having bilateral cochlear implants put on my brain in 2023 last year. I have been competing in CrossFit since 2018 while training around two shoulder surgeries and two brain surgeries last year, most recently being the first deaf athlete to win the Adaptive Crossfit Games for my division this past September. Prior to CrossFit I was a competitive swimmer in high school and college, also swimming with masters teams upon college graduation. I wasn't diagnosed as being profoundly deaf until I was 26 because the Dr. thought I was lying about it when I was a little girl, so I read lips and body language very well and have tons of other ways of “communi-Katie-ing” to use.
