How Jack Dempsey Changed Heavyweight Boxing Forever
3 views4 Oct 2026
Could any modern heavyweight handle Jack Dempsey's aggressive style? When Jack Dempsey exploded onto the scene in 1919, he revolutionized boxing. At just 190 lbs, Dempsey introduced the aggressive "Dempsey Roll"—bobbing, weaving, and using a lethal drop-step to turn every round into total chaos before his opponent could even set their feet.
His wild knockout power drew massive stadium crowds, but Gene Tunney cracked the code in 1926 and 1927. Tunney used footwork and lateral movement to outbox Dempsey twice—including the infamous "Long Count" fight where Tunney survived a heavy knockdown to win the decision.
Tunney's retirement left a void in the division, paving the way for the rise of the legendary "Brown Bomber," Joe Louis, in 1937.
Did Gene Tunney get lucky with the "Long Count," or was Dempsey fairly beaten? Debate in the comments!
